Nigella Lawson: sorry, Marmite, it’s Vegemite I love now | News
Just 119 years after it was invented, Marmite has come full circle. From beer it came; to beer the slowest-moving condiment of them all has finally returned.
In 1902 the Marmite Food Extract Co was formed in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, to use by-product yeast from Bass beer to make a salty paste. Last week, Camden Brewery in north London announced a special edition, Marmite-flavoured tinny. “Whether you’re a lover or a hater, this distinctive Camden Marmite Ale will be one your tastebuds will remember,” Sophie Allan, the spread’s brand manager, said. Ominous.
We shouldn’t be surprised that a recommendation from Marmite comes with a side order of threat, because Britain’s pre-eminent breakfast bitumen has always revelled in defying conventional wisdom.
