Economic disparities are real, witnesses tell Congress members in Lorain – Morning Journal
The Great Lakes region has suffered from losing industrial jobs but can return to its status as an economic powerhouse of the United States, said seven witnesses in a congressional hearing held in Lorain.
On Oct. 18, the House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth held a field hearing at El Centro de Servicios Sociales Inc., 2800 Pearl Ave., South Lorain.
The program was titled “Renewing Prosperity in the Industrial Heartland: An Economic Agenda for Forgotten Communities.”
“That is not by chance,” said Rep. Jim Himes, D-Connecticut, committee chairman. “Midwest communities like Lorain are the cradle of American industry. The products and goods produced here and across the Midwest have long sustained this country and its people and helped strengthen America’s place in the international economy.
