Biden renews US Covid-19 vaccination push to counter faltering demand

WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG) – US President Joe Biden’s administration will work with churches, colleges, businesses and celebrities to boost coronavirus vaccinations in the US, where demand for the shots has faltered. In a speech at the White House on Wednesday (June 2), Biden announced a national month of action, including initiatives such as free childcare for people getting vaccinated, extended hours at pharmacies and phone banking to encourage people to get inoculated. “It’s clearer than ever – the more people we get vaccinated, the more success we’re going to have in our fight against the virus,” Biden said. Biden has set a target of giving 70 per cent of US adults at least one shot by July 4, when the country celebrates its Independence Day holiday. About 62.9 per cent have received at least one dose so far. Biden is on pace to hit his target, barring a sharp new slowdown. The administration’s new effort comes as the pace of US vaccinations has slowed to the lowest level since January, when vaccines were in short supply. Swiss Market Ends On Positive Note

(RTTNews) – The Switzerland stock market ended on a positive note on Wednesday, in line with the trend seen across Europe, as continued optimism about global economic recovery underpinned sentiment. The benchmark SMI ended with a gain of 35.47 points or 0.31% at 11,470.35, after climbing to a high of 11,495.31. Richemont shares climbed 1.7%. Novartis ended nearly 1% up and ABB gained 0.8%. Nestle and Swisscom both moved up by about 0.7%. Swiss Life Holding, Partners Group and Alcon shed 0.7 to 0.85%. Microsoft to unveil new version of Windows on June 24

The move comes a week after CEO Satya Nadella teased major enhancements to the PC operating system for developers as well as creators.Windows, the dominant operating system for personal computers, is the source of 14% of total revenue for Microsoft, one of the most valuable companies in the world. Apple says consumers and advertisers spent more than $600 billion through apps last year

Britain seeks extra AstraZeneca vaccine shots to combat Beta Covid-19 variant

LONDON (REUTERS) – Britain is in talks with AstraZeneca for additional doses of its Covid-19 vaccine that will have been modified to better target the Beta coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa, health minister Matt Hancock said on Wednesday (June 2). Britain has previously secured 100 million doses of the vaccine, developed at the University of Oxford and licensed to AstraZeneca. “We’ve started commercial negotiations with AstraZeneca to secure a variant vaccine: future supplies of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine that have been adapted to tackle the B1351 variant first identified in South Africa,” Hancock said in a speech at the university. South Africa put use of AstraZeneca’s shot on hold in February after data showed it gave minimal protection against mild-to-moderate infection caused by the country’s dominant variant, now known as Beta. Oxford considers the variant top priority for vaccine developers, and AstraZeneca has targeted the development of new vaccines against variants by the autumn. Britain has committed to funding trials for the new adapted vaccine, which could be fast-tracked through the regulatory process following new guidance in March. Israel to expand Covid-19 vaccine roll-out to 12-15 age group

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel’s health ministry announced Wednesday (June 2) that children aged 12-15 would be able to receive coronavirus vaccinations, despite “a possible link” between Pfizer-BioNTech inoculations and myocarditis among young men. On Tuesday, Israel lifted nearly all Covid restrictions after a nationwide vaccination campaign for people aged 16 and up. There were just four new positive cases of the virus recorded in the country that day. The health ministry also on Tuesday announced the findings of an investigation into a possible link between myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, and the coronavirus vaccinations administered in Israel. An observation of 275 myocarditis cases recorded between December 2020 and May 2021 among more than five million vaccinated people found that 148 of them “occurred around the time of vaccination” – 27 after the first dose, and 121 after the second. “There is some probability for a possible link between the second vaccine dose and the onset of myocarditis among young men aged 16 to 30,” the ministry said, with the link “found to be stronger among the younger age group, 16 to 19”.
