Many cryptocurrency firms are not meeting money laundering rules, UK watchdog warns

The regulator introduced a temporary licensing regime for firms whose applications haven’t yet been approved to allow them to continue trading.The FCA said Thursday that it had pushed back the deadline for the so-called Temporary Registration Regime from July 9, 2021, to March 31, 2022.”A significantly high number of businesses are not meeting the required standards under the Money Laundering Regulations resulting in an unprecedented number of businesses withdrawing their applications,” the FCA said in a statement.”The extended date allows cryptoasset firms to continue to carry on business whilst the FCA continues with the robust assessment being undertaken.”Just five crypto companies are currently registered with the FCA. UK education czar quits over lack of funding in Johnson's Covid-19 catch-up plan

LONDON (BLOOMBERG) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s education czar, who was tasked with helping children recover from lost schooling due to the Covid-19 pandemic, resigned over lack of funding pledged by the government. “I do not believe it is credible that a successful recovery can be achieved with a programme of support of this size,” Mr Kevan Collins, who was appointed in February, said in a statement after the government announced a £1.4 billion (S$2.6 billion) package for extra tutoring and training for teachers. His resignation is a significant blow to Mr Johnson and casts doubt over the Prime Minister’s efforts to repair the social damage and worsening inequalities created by the pandemic. WASHINGTON – Home Covid19 test kits are proliferating in the United States, with several available online, and some available over the counter at pharmacies. Some are antigen tests, which detect protein fragments specific to the coronavirus. The turnaround time for results is usually very quick and, in some cases, results can be reported within 15 minutes. Some are PCR (polymer chain reaction) tests, in which one’s sample must be sent to a laboratory for analysis. For these, the turnaround time is longer. Depending on the mail and the demand on the laboratory, it could be as short as a day or as long as two or three days. PCR testing is considered the gold standard, detecting RNA or genetic material that is specific to the virus. In its December assessment, California-based organisation Grand View Research in a note said: “The global Covid-19 diagnostics market size is estimated at US$84.4 billion (S$111.8 billion) in 2020 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 3.1 per cent from 2021 to 2027. World food price index surges in May to highest level since 2011: FAO

ROME (REUTERS) – World food prices rose in May at their fastest monthly rate in more than a decade, posting a 12th consecutive monthly increase to hit their highest level since September 2011, the United Nations food agency said on Thursday (June 3). The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) also issued its first forecast for world cereal production in 2021, predicting output of nearly 2.821 billion tonnes, a new record and 1.9 per cent up on 2020 levels. The FAO’s food price index, which measures monthly changes for a basket of cereals, oil seeds, dairy products, meat and sugar, averaged 127.1 points last month versus a revised 121.3 in April. The April figure was previously given as 120.9. On a year-on-year basis, prices were up 39.7 per cent in May. FAO’s cereal price index rose 6.0 per cent in May month on month and 36.6 per cent year on year. Maize prices led the surge and are now 89.9 per cent above their year-earlier value. LONGi breaks three world records for solar cell efficiency of N-type TOPCon, P-type TOPCon and HJT

XI’AN, China, June 3, 2021 /CNW/ — LONGi has consolidated its leading role in R&D innovation in the global PV industry by setting new cell efficiency records for N- and P-type TOPcon and HJT. The company announced in April its record of 25.09% for N-Type TOPCon solar cell efficiency and, one month later, testing at the Institute for Solar Energy Research (ISFH) in Hamelin, Germany, has confirmed that the conversion efficiency of N-type monocrystalline bifacial TOPCon solar cells developed at LONGi’s Cell R&D Center has now reached 25.21%.
