OTTAWA (REUTERS) – The Canadian government on Tuesday (June 8) opened two new routes to permanent residence for Hong Kong recent graduates and workers living in Canada as part of an initiative initially announced last year. One pathway will allow Hong Kong residents who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution in the past three years to apply for permanent residence. The other pathway targets Hong Kong residents who have worked in Canada for at least one year in the past three years, in addition to having completed post-secondary studies in Canada or abroad within the past five years. “This landmark initiative will strengthen our economy and deepen the strong ties between Canada and the people of Hong Kong,” Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said in a statement. “Skilled Hong Kongers will have a unique opportunity to both develop their careers and help accelerate our recovery.” The Canadian government first announced the special immigration measures in November in response to China’s imposition of a sweeping new national security law in the former British colony last year. PARIS (REUTERS) – French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face on Tuesday (June 8) by a man in a crowd of onlookers while on a walkabout in southern France, video of the incident showed. Mr Macron’s security entourage quickly intervened to pull the man to the ground and move Mr Macron away from him. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, broadcasters BFM TV and RMC radio reported. French Prime Minister Jean Castex said the incident was an affront to democracy. The incident took place while Mr Macron was on a visit to the Drome region in south-eastern France, where he met restaurateurs and students to talk about how life is returning to normal after the Covid-19 epidemic. In video circulating on social media, Mr Macron, dressed in shirt sleeves, can be seen walking towards a crowd of people who were behind a metal barrier. (RTTNews) – Biopharmaceutical company Incyte Corp. (INCY) announced Tuesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended the review period for the supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for ruxolitinib (Jakafi) for the treatment of adult and pediatric patients 12 years and older with steroid-refractory chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date is now extended by three months to September 22, 2021 to allow time to review additional data submitted by Incyte in response to the FDA’s information request. The sNDA was based on data from REACH3, a Phase 3 randomized, open-label, multicenter study comparing ruxolitinib with best available therapy (BAT) in adult and pediatric patients 12 years and older with steroid-refractory chronic GVHD. Jakafi is marketed by Incyte in the U.S. and by Novartis as Jakavi (ruxolitinib) outside the U.S. Jakafi is a first-in-class JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of polycythemia vera (PV) in adults.
LONDON (REUTERS) – Aspirin does not improve the chances of survival in severely ill Covid-19 patients, early results from one of Britain’s biggest trials studying the commonly used painkiller and blood thinner showed on Tuesday (June 8). The scientists behind the trial, which is looking into a range of potential treatments for Covid-19, evaluated aspirin’s effects on nearly 15,000 hospitalised patients infected with the novel coronavirus. Since the drug helps reduce blood clots in other diseases, it was tested in Covid-19 patients who are at a higher risk of clotting issues. “Although aspirin was associated with a small increase in the likelihood of being discharged alive, this does not seem to be sufficient to justify its widespread use for patients hospitalised with Covid-19,” said Peter Horby, co-chief investigator of the trial. In the study, named RECOVERY, a little less than half of the patients were selected at random and given 150mg of aspirin once a day, and the remaining were given usual care alone. The trial, run by the University of Oxford, is also looking at the effectiveness of several other treatments, and was the first to show that the widely available steroid dexamethasone, could save lives

MADRID (AFP) – One in every 10 Europeans has been duped into buying counterfeit products, mostly coming from Asia, a study by the EU’s intellectual property office (EUIPO) showed Tuesday (June 8). Many consumers struggle to differentiate between authentic products and fakes, said the study by EUIPO which is based in the Spanish coastal city of Alicante. Counterfeit products account for 6.8 per cent of the European Union’s imports and are worth 121 billion euros (S$195 billion) according to figures from EUIPO and the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD). Counterfeits are present in all sectors from clothing to electronics, toys and wine, with 9 per cent of European “admitting they had been duped into making such a purchase,” the study found. But the percentage varies widely by country, with 12 per cent in Spain, 9 per cent in France, 19 per cent in Bulgaria and 2 per cent in Switzerland. In a context where e-commerce is booming globally due to the pandemic, in which 70 per cent of Europeans shopped online last year, Eurostat figures show, “the ability to identify counterfeit products remains problematic for EU citizens”, the study says.
