(RTTNews) – Australia’s trade surplus increased notably in April as exports increased amid falling imports, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday. The trade surplus increased to A$8.02 billion from A$5.79 billion in March. This was above the economists’ forecast of A$7.9 billion. Exports grew 3 percent to A$39.77 billion, while imports fell 3 percent to A$31.74 billion. As the increase in the trade surplus was largely driven by higher commodity prices, export volumes will need to recover further in the months ahead to prevent trade from being a drag on GDP growth yet again in the second quarter, Ben Udy, an economist at Capital Economics, said. Another report from the statistical office showed that retail sales grew 1.1 percent on a monthly basis, as initially estimated, in April, following a 1.3 percent rise in March. On a yearly basis, retail turnover surged 25 percent in April.
MOSCOW (AFP) – One of Russia’s last remaining independent media outlets, VTimes, announced on Thursday (June 3) it would cease publication later this month after it was branded a “foreign agent” by authorities. The statement from VTimes editors comes at a difficult time for Russian journalists and editors who do not work for state-run media, with space for independent journalism and dissenting voices shrinking dramatically. Editors said in a statement they had considered several ways to continue publication since the designation last month, but that each scenario rendered staff vulnerable to criminal prosecution or imprisonment. “Essentially, VTimes is being pushed into the niche of opposition, political media. But we conceived of and made a completely different publication,” management said in a statement. “Therefore, we decided to stop publishing VTimes on June 12, the Independence Day of Russia.” The Justice Ministry explained in May that VTimes was being added to Russia’s list of foreign agents because it is registered in the Netherlands. The branding requires branded organisations to disclose sources of funding and label publications with a tag. The designation is seen as a deterrent for advertisers, and staff of publications with the label say

LONDON (BLOOMBERG) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is likely to keep tight limits on international travel for the weeks ahead, denting hopes of a major summer revival for aviation and tourism businesses which have been hammered by the pandemic. Officials are set to announce a revised “green list” of countries deemed safe for leisure travel on Thursday (Jun 3), but the government is likely to stay cautious in the face of a growing threat of another wave of infections, a person familiar with the matter said. Mr Johnson said that while he wanted to allow foreign travel, the government will have “no hesitation” in moving previously safe countries onto to the high risk list if their pandemic situation worsens. The government’s Joint Biosecurity Centre will make recommendations about the safety of travel, he said. “We’ve got to be cautious and we’ve got to continue to put countries on the red list, on the amber list, when that is necessary,” Mr Johnson told reporters. “We will have no hesitation in moving countries from the green list to the amber list to the red list, if we have to do so. The priority is to continue the

WASHINGTON (NYTIMES) – The Trump Justice Department secretly seized the phone records of four New York Times reporters spanning nearly four months in 2017 as part of a leak investigation, the Biden administration disclosed on Wednesday (June 2). It was the latest in a series of revelations about the Trump administration secretly obtaining reporters’ communications records in an effort to uncover their sources. Last month, the Biden Justice Department disclosed Trump-era seizures of the phone logs of reporters who work for The Washington Post and the phone and email logs for a CNN reporter. Mr Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The Times, condemned the action by the Trump administration. “Seizing the phone records of journalists profoundly undermines press freedom,” he said in a statement. “It threatens to silence the sources we depend on to provide the public with essential information about what the government is doing.” Last month, after the disclosures about the seizures of communications records involving Post and CNN reporters, US President Joe Biden said he would not allow the department to take such a step during his administration, calling it “simply, simply wrong”. Referring to that declaration, Mr Baquet added: “President Biden has

BERLIN (REUTERS) – The German government plans to speed up the expansion of wind and solar energy by 2030 as part of its climate protection programme, a draft law seen by Reuters showed on Wednesday (June 2). The new plan aims to expand installed production capacity of onshore wind energy to 95 gigawatts by 2030 from a previous target of 71 GW, and of solar energy to 150 GW from 100 GW, the draft showed. Germany’s installed capacity of onshore wind power stood at of 54.4 GW and of solar energy at 52 GW in 2020. The climate protection programme also envisages funding of around 7.8 billion euros (S$12.6 billion) for next year, including 2.5 billion euros for building refurbishment and an extra 1.8 billion euros for subsidies for electric car purchases. The plan also includes doubling support to help industry change processes to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, such as in steel or cement production. However, these financial pledges can only be approved after the German federal election in September. The move comes after Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled in April that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government had failed to set out how to cut
